This is the section of the site where we can recommend a few stand-out shops, services, accommodation and routes we have experienced along the way.

If you’re ever in these areas then we recon they’re definitely worth checking out:

Werfen Hotel – Obauer

Comfortable rooms, delicious food and the owner is a wonderful lady!

Alpe-adria cycle route

Taking you from Salzburg, over the Alpes and down to the sea in Italian Grado. Well marked and interesting.

Dubrovnik -Villa Micika

Cheap & friendly, can take bus to old city

Split- Black Cat Restaurant (now toc bistro)

Tasty interesting local specialities

Bike shops

Patras Bike Shop – Topodilato

Sound advice about routes and equipment

Thessaloniki Bike Shop – Action Bike Club

Best shop for touring/wheels we found in Thessaloniki. Helpful staff and good route knowledge.

Nafpaktos -Hotel Akti

The friendliest staff and the best breakfast ever!

 Galaxidi – To Spitaki Apartment

Beautiful open plan apartment with a patio garden, open fire and an oven! We stayed here for our Christmas treat and Stella the owner made us very welcome.

 Other Activities

Ski centre- 3-5 Pigadia – Northern Greece Nr Thessaloniki

Ski centre 2 hours drive from Thessaloniki. Cheap ski hire and lift pass – when we were there the condition weren’t great but it was cheap and so much fun 🙂

 Ancient Olymipia

If you’re in the area a visit to Ancient Olympia is worth it. 9Euros a ticket is quite pricey but you can spend hours marvelling at the old olympic stadium and the ancient artefacts.

Srinagar – Young Ambassador House Boat (technically a dert?)

We had the whole boat (ensuite double bedroom, living room, dining room and balcony) to ourselves for £7 a night including breakfast and dinner.

Boulevard rd, gate no. 7

Old Manali – Ashock guesthouse

Just opposite the Shiva Garden Cafe in Old Manali is the Ashock Guesthouse. Comfortable doubles with a shared bathroom for £2 a night. Hot shower! 🙂

Old Manali – Shiva Garden Cafe

Traditional traveller fare, but every dish delicious. Best breakfast in town! Best pizza, best chinese food and best thali. Grand statements  I know.

Old Manali – The Bee’s Knees, Mexican Restaurant

Homemade guacamole, need we say more?

Old Manali – Sesh Besh Restaurant

Veg pagodas amazing, Indian food top notch, and friendly too.

Parco Nazionale Foreste Casentinesi.

Beautiful national park with smooth roads through the forest. There’s also a wolf research centre!

We cycled through Northern Tuscany and it has to be some of the most rewarding and idyllic cycling! If only we had road bikes for those sweeping smooth climbs and descents!

Osh -TES Guesthouse

Rooms here are quite pricey, but you can camp in the garden for a fair price, or even stay in a yurt. Amazing shower! Even more amazing breakfast included in the price.

Duck kebabs. Expensive but delicious! Name?

Tivat – Sailing

Katie Squires & Tim Layton

Khorag- Pamir Lodge

We stayed for 18 days (back recovery) and felt most welcome. You can camp or stay in rooms- shared bathroom and hot water bucket shower. The lodge a walk away from everywhere but is extremely peaceful with a nice garden

The Pamir Highway

Running from Dushanbe in Tajikistan to Osh in Kyrgyzstan, the Pamir Highway is know as the Roof of the World and it certainly feels it at times. Our favourite section was the ‘northern road’ from Dushanbe to Khorag – taking you though winding rough tracks dotted with small villages (and ice cream to cool you down!) eventually taking you to run parallel with the Afghan border. Awesome.

Bike Shops

Ankara – Gungorler Bisiklet

Really helpful, decent workshop and a bike wash area.

Ankara – Museum ankara

Sultanhani- Campsite

Friendly staff, lots of apple tea. Near an interesting Caravanserai.

Uzengul- bungalow

A popular holiday spot for students. Felt like a theme park, but our accommodation was peaceful.

Khiva – Afandi ga

$10 per room, shared bathroom. Very small and personable, tasty food and more tea than you can drink. We loved it here 🙂

Khiva Silk Workshop

Supported by UNESCO and Project Mercy this is a co-operative carpet making venture creating work opportunies for local women and men, maintaining good working conditions and unique carpet designs. Set up by British guy, whose book makes an exceelend guide to Khiva!

 Samarkand and Bukhara

2 fascinating cities, incredible architecture and a far reaching colourful history.
